I want to thank Dr. Jay Long for saving my life and by that I mean everything. He saved my career as a law enforcement officer, a father and a husband. I would start out by saying that I just wish I would have done this 10 years ago because I have robbed myself of living. I have always been a big guy but it never really slowed me down until I got hurt on the job apprehending a burglar running from a scene. I suffered a post tibial tendon tear, meniscus tear in one knee and a crushed disc in my lower back. At the time I was over weight to the tone of 310 pounds but as a year and a half went by I gradually got to 420 pounds. I could barely walk, I hurt constantly. Doctors would not perform surgery on me because of my weight and told me I needed to loose 100 plus pounds before they would consider it. One of my doctors pointed me into Dr. Long’s direction and after speaking to him about weight loss surgery and I never looked back. I started around 420 and I am nearly 15 months post op. I now weight 181 pounds. I have not been under 200 pounds since junior high school. I am health and take no medication. I was on high blood pressure pills, and anti inflammatory medication just so that I could walk everyday. It surely was a struggle. My work was trying to medical retire me and with only two years until full retirement. Today I can say that I am probably in better shape then most men in my department and can run circles around most of them. That’s right I run, I work out twice a day. I have went from wearing a 58 in the waist to wearing a 32 in the waist. I am enjoying life and things I could never do with my son and family in general. I sleep better, as a mater of fact, I can’t remember every sleeping through a whole night without getting up at least twice during the night. But now I never wake up until the morning and usually before the alarm clock gets me up. I am energized and there is nothing that I can not do. I have run 5K’s , Zip Lining, biking, hiking, go kart racing you name it. More over I am pain free from head to toe. The surgeries I thought I needed to fix things have fixed themselves or at least they do not bother me anymore. I have had multiple friends follow suit and have come to Dr. Long for help and now their lives are forever changing for the better. I have people looking to me for advice and health tips, but honestly I myself am still learning but it keeps me in check to help others along my journey. It wasn’t easy but it was so rewarding and it has become a whole new life for me. If I could give anyone a bit of advice it would be this; Don’t put off tomorrow what needs to be done today, I needed help and Dr. Jay Long gave me that help and so much more. He gave me my life back and I am forever grateful to him for that. I would like to further say that his staff is wonderful and they all called on me at one time or the other just to see how I was doing. Thank you Dr. Jay Long and all of his staff for being there for me when no one else was.
First let me tell you how great my physician Jay Long is. He is such a very knowledgeable wonderful doctor and so down to earth. He has been my doctor for more than 8 years and to me he’s family. He is so helpful with me regarding my weight loss surgery and p-a-t-i-e-n-c-e. Before I got the Lap band, I was overweight, and I had high blood pressure, diabetes and cholesterol problems. But once I received my Lab band surgery, my health is so much better. I appreciate everything that Dr. Jay Long does for me and I have to give praise to his fantastic staff. If you are in the market of losing weight, you need to give him a call and it will be worth it…I’m a living witness.
Dr. Long is a true professional and very talented surgeon. He has been nothing but gracious and kind to me and my family. I have had 3 surgeries with Dr. Long and will not hesitate to return to him. His office staff is awesome. Debbie had been gracious and kind handling all my paperwork. Jennifer is always smiling and makes me feel comfortable no matter the situation I am going through. Rhonda is also very gracious and concerned with my well-being. I was in the hospital a month ago and she saw my wife in the cafeteria. Her concern for me was amazing. As soon as she learned of the situation I was going through she instantly began to text Dr. Long to let him know I was there. There is NO WAY I would ever see another surgeon. Thanks so much Dr. LONG, You have been a blessing to me and my family!2.

Beginning to realize I am the smallest I’ve ever been in my adult life right now and want to thank Dr. Long and his staff for helping me to obtain this once unattainable goal. Having been on every diet in the world my food addictions won every time…. until NOW! Looking back at pictures from two years ago I don’t remember being in that body, I didn’t see myself as being so BIG! I was still active, I did everything all my friends did, I didn’t think my weight held me back, but I did get depressed seeing my reflection in a glass door or window when walking by, I did not see myself as attractive (so why would my husband), I hated having to go shopping and picking out something my grandmother would wear! I finally took the first step and went to the seminar to find out more about the lap band. I was truly motivated and it has been a downhill ride from that point on. Every bump and hurdle I passed on my journey has been well worth the results!
I am now starting to see that I just thought I was active, and I just told myself that my weight didn’t hold me back, and I just had on blinders telling myself that I was not as big as so and so, because now that I see what it is like to be a “normal” weight I can’t ever imagine going back to where I was! NOW I am active- running several times a week having completed two 5Ks this past year and signed up to run another one next month, I’m not embarrassed to go to the pool with my two sons, I exercise while waiting on my boys to finish up baseball or football practice- I’m not hiding in the car waiting to leave. I’m ready and waiting to go out with my husband and have a romantic time J. AND I can’t wait to try on clothes to see what size I’ve dwindled down to! I am truly amazed and in awe of how great life can be! Thank you for giving me my life back!!!
I’ve struggled with my weight most of my life, losing weight with all kinds of diets only to regain what I had lost and usually adding more. I saw Dr. Long’s advertisement in the paper about bariatric surgeries and decided to find out more. At the free seminar, Dr. Long said one thing that really hit me: “Diets don’t work.”
After the seminar, I set up an appointment with him. Dr. Long sat down with me and explained the pros and cons of LAP-BAND® vs. gastric bypass. He encouraged me to go with LAP-BAND®, answered all my questions and gave me written information to take home. After discussing with my husband, I decided to go with the LAP-BAND® procedure and started the process of getting health insurance to cover the procedure.
Within a week of surgery, I started my office visits with Dr. Long. He has always been concerned about my success and took time to find out how I was doing with restriction. Anytime I had any problems with my band being too tight and causing problems, he adjusted it and helped me to lose 90 pounds. Dr. Long and his staff, Debbie the office manager, and Sarah the receptionist, have always been positive and supportive. Veronica Patterson, the nurse in charge of the Bariatric program at St. Vincent’s East has also been down the path of bariatric surgery, and she is very encouraging. It’s been almost two years (May 6, 2008) since my LAP-BAND®procedure, and I’ve never felt better. I can do things now that I hadn’t done in a long time, and I’ve had more energy. It’s not without work, but well worth the effort when you follow your physician’s instructions.
I had my gastric bypass surgery in October of ’09 by Dr. Jay C. Long. I am a year and a half out, and I’ve lost 230 pounds. I was at a whopping 395 pounds and tried many weight loss plans until I finally made up my mind to have the surgery. I had high blood pressure, high cholesterol, and sleep apnea, and after about six months out, all of my co-morbidities were gone. My life is now great! I can do things that I wasn’t able to do at 395 pounds. The surgery was a blessing and a tool that I will use from here on out. Without it, I would probably not have seen my two boys graduate from high school. I’m 39 years old, and I feel like I’m in my 20s again. People ask me if I had it to do it all over again would I.of course I would – 100 times over! The surgery has been a lifesaver. I do want to thank Dr. Long and his staff for being so kind and helping me along the way. Dr. Long answered my questions thoroughly and was very meticulous with the surgery. He was always courteous when I saw him, whether it was at St. Vincent’s East or St. Vincent’s St. Clair. He’s the kind of surgeon you’d want to see when you wake up from surgery – to thank him for saving your life and giving you another chance. If you are having doubts about having gastric bypass surgery, don’t!!! Let Dr. Long and his staff help you toward a healthier lifestyle.
In November of 2007, Dr. Jay C. Long saved my life. I was a diabetic going on insulin. I had high blood pressure, high cholesterol, and bad knees. I took seven medications a day, and they weren’t working. I was told that I would be dead or in a wheelchair in two years. I was a size 26 and had been heavy all my life. As a result, I decided to have gastric bypass surgery.
After surgery, I am no longer taking medications, and I am healthy. I work out at the gym, and even my knees are better. I wear a size 4-6 now. It has been two and a half years, and I am still maintaining my weight. I have lost over 125 pounds.
I can now do all the things that make life worthwhile. I can walk on a beach, play on the floor with my grandchildren, fit in a chair or booth, go on roller coasters, go on a trip, go up stairs, and be able to breathe.
I am now healthier than when I was at 30, and I’m 62 years old. You are never too old to have a better life. I have a friend who is 72 and had it. She is doing well and has lost over 100 pounds in nine months. Never give up on yourself.you are worth it, and you deserve to have a good life!
If you are considering gastric bypass surgery, I can only say “do it.” The only regret I have is that I didn’t do it sooner.
In April of 2009, Dr. Long and I began the journey to save my life. I weighed 236 pounds and was 4 feet 10 inches tall. As Dr. Long and I discussed, I was headed for disaster. I had no co-morbidities…YET. I wanted to have gastric bypass surgery, but I was quite nervous and scared. After going through the process, I knew this surgery would save my life. When I woke up from the surgery and spoke with Jeff, I knew I would be fine. The first few weeks were tedious, but I was focused. Now, it is one year later, and I have to tell Dr. Long, Jeff, Debbie, and Sarah.THANK YOU! You all are such a great support team, and neither my husband nor I could have done it without you!!!!!!! All of you played a role in saving not only my life but my husband’s too. Everyone in my family has seen the great work that Dr. Long and his staff do, and I believe that he is very passionate about helping those like me who feel there is no hope by encouraging us to take that next step and that anyone can do this if they just follow the guidelines. Now, I weigh 116 pounds and feel better than ever. My husband lost 230 pounds, and we are both very grateful and thankful to the staff at Birmingham Minimally Invasive Surgery for all the support we received.
