Gastric bypass is one of the most popular types of bariatric surgery. During gastric bypass surgery, surgeons alter the stomach and the small intestine for optimal weight loss, making it a restrictive and malabsorptive procedure. Gastric bypass is ideal for obese individuals who have struggled to lose excess weight with a healthy diet and regular exercise.

Do you think you could benefit from gastric bypass surgery? Dr. Long, Birmingham Minimally Invasive Surgery’s bariatric surgeon, can help! Dr. Long opened his practice in 2006 and has been performing gastric bypass surgery near Atlanta, Georgia, since.

Gastric Bypass Surgery in Atlanta, Georgia

There are two ways bariatric surgeons can perform gastric bypass surgery: laparoscopically or openly. Laparoscopy is the preferred choice of many surgeons, including Dr. Long, because it is a minimally invasive procedure. The benefit? Surgeons make smaller incisions, thus allowing patients to have minimal scarring, less pain, and a faster recovery.

The Procedure

Surgeons can complete the gastric bypass procedure in 60 to 120 minutes. At Birmingham Minimally Invasive Surgery, we begin the procedure by administering a general anesthetic. Then, Dr. Long makes up to six small abdominal incisions. Using a laparoscope, he cuts the patient’s stomach to create a small pouch and staples it closed. Next, he separates the lower small intestine from the first and second segments of the intestine and attaches it to the new stomach pouch. These alterations allow food to bypass the lower stomach and the upper intestine, therefore limiting the body’s calorie absorption. Finally, Dr. Long checks the connection for leakage.

Patient Recovery

Post-operation, we require patients to recover in the hospital for one to two days. Our team will be present to help you manage pain, provide you with medication, and walk you through the gastric bypass diet. Once we feel you have made an adequate recovery, you will be discharged from the hospital to return home to Atlanta.
