Areas of Practice
In the field of general surgery, we treat conditions ranging from cancer and gallstones to hernias and inflammation. In addition, we also specialize in performing weight loss surgery. These procedures are meant for people for whom traditional weight loss techniques, such as diet and exercise, have not been successful. Our weight loss procedures include laparoscopic gastric bypass, Lap-Band placement, laparoscopic sleeve gastrectomy, ORBERA intragastric balloon placement, and revisional weight loss surgeries.
When patients have a surgical procedure performed at Birmingham Minimally Invasive Surgery, our goal is to make their recovery as quick and painless as possible. Rather than creating large incisions, the surgeon will usually perform the surgery using small tubes, a video camera, and small surgical instruments. These smaller entry points make for a faster recovery and have a much lower chance of infection. Using traditional “open” techniques, patients frequently see recovery times of six to eight weeks. With minimally invasive techniques, the patient can be back to work in four to seven days.
