Bariatric, or weight loss, surgery is an advanced procedure that alters the capacity of an individual’s stomach. With a smaller stomach, a patient consumes less food and feels full faster. Depending on the type of weight-loss procedure, the small intestine may also be targeted to restrict calorie absorption. Bariatric surgery is an option for individuals affected by obesity. It is often recommended for morbidly obese individuals who have not achieved significant weight loss through diet and exercise alone.
